How to View Illinois Wesleyan Intranet Resources from Off Campus
If you view Illinois Wesleyan University web pages from on campus, or through the University's dial-in modem pools, you have access to the full range of University intranet services. These services include the Information Technology Hotline, the Library's Lexis/Nexis and FirstSearch services, and various other campus-only information services.
But what if you are away from campus and want to use these services? You can, but you need to set your web browser use the University's intranet proxy server.
The proxy server uses your Campus NetID and password to give you access to university campus only resources.
You can follow these steps to configure your browser to use the proxy.
Firefox 1.5 (Windows)
- Click on the Tools menu
- Pull down to Options
- Verify that the General icon is selected at the top of this window
- Under Connection, click on Connection Settings
- Select Manual Proxy Configuration
- On the line which reads HTTP: enter proxy.iwu.edu and enter 3128 for the port
- No other entries are needed; click the OK buttons until you have returned to your web browser
- Test by going to the campus directory or the Library web site to begin using Illinois Wesleyan intranet resources
Firefox 2.0 (Windows)
- Click on the Tools menu
- Pull down to Options
- Verify that the Advanced icon is selected at the top of this window
- Under Network, click on Settings
- Select Manual Proxy Configuration
- On the line which reads HTTP: enter proxy.iwu.edu and enter 3128 for the port
- No other entries are needed; click the OK buttons until you have returned to your web browser
- Test by going to the campus directory or the Library web site to begin using Illinois Wesleyan intranet resources
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 or 7 (Windows)
- Click on the menu item Tools and select Internet Options
- Go to the tab labeled Connections and click the LAN Settings button
- A dialog box labeled Local Area Network (LAN) Settings will appear
- Check the box labeled Use a proxy server
- Click the Advanced button
- A dialog box labeled Proxy Settings will appear
- Find the line which reads HTTP:. The value of Proxy address to use will be proxy.iwu.edu. The value of Port should be 3128 . Please leave other fields blank.
- Click the OK buttons until you have returned to your web browser
- Test by going to the campus directory or the Library web site to begin using Illinois Wesleyan intranet resources
Mac OS 10.4 and earlier (all web browsers)
- Open System Preferences (the Apple light switch located in the Dock)
- Click once on the icon labeled Network
- Select your network connection. If you use a broadband (DSL or Cable) connection to the Internet by connecting a network cable to your Mac, Ethernet is probably the appropriate choice. If you are using broadband (DSL or Cable) via a wireless connection to your Mac, choose Airport.
- Click the Configure button; on the next screen click the Proxies tab
- Check the box Web Proxy (http) under "Select a proxy server to configure"
- The form will change to show two fields for Web Proxy Server; enter proxy.iwu.edu in the larger field; enter 3128 in the smaller
- Check the box labeled Proxy Server Requires Password. Your Mac should now prompt you to enter your Campus NetID and password.
- No other entries are needed; click the Apply Now button, and close System Preferences
- Test by going to the campus directory or the Library web site to begin using Illinois Wesleyan intranet resources.
Mac OS 10.5 (all web browsers) downloadable instructions
IMPORTANT NOTE: using the Illinois Wesleyan proxy server forces ALL your requests for web pages to go through the proxy server. We strongly recommend turning your browser's proxy settings OFF after you finish working with Illinois Wesleyan web resources.
