Admissions

Placement Exams

The international application for admission to Illinois Wesleyan requires official copies of the SAT-I or ACT scores, as well as an official copy of the Test of English as a foreign Language (TOEFL) scores for students whose native language is not English. Completion of Level 112 at any ELS Language Centers facility will also satisfy the English language requirement for admission.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT-I) is a three-hour test, primarily multiple choice, that measures critical reading and mathematical reasoning abilities. Minimum combined SAT-I scores of 1140, with a minimum Critical Reading (verbal) score of 580, are recommended for admission.

The American College Test (ACT) Assessment includes four curriculum-based tests that measure students' educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science reasoning. The tests are based on the major areas of instruction in American high schools and colleges. A minimum ACT composite score of 25, with a minimum English score of 22, is recommended for admission.

The TOEFL uses multiple-choice format to evaluate English proficiency in three areas: Listening Comprehension, measuring ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America. Structure and Written Expression, measuring ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English. Reading Comprehension, measuring ability to understand non-technical reading matter.

Illinois Wesleyan does not offer English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. All international applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL requirement applies also to students whose courses may have been taught in English (in India, Ghana, Pakistan, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Tanzania, etc.), but whose native language is not English.

A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 80 iBT (Internet-based) is required for admission to Illinois Wesleyan University. TOEFL scores more than two years old will not be accepted. We prefer that the scores be sent directly to Illinois Wesleyan from ETS; however, if a copy is mailed, it must be certified by a school official as a true and accurate copy of the original. To register for the TOEFL, students must have the current Bulletin of Information for TOEFL, TWE, and TSE. This bulletin may be obtained from the following address:
