Educ225: Foundations of Education: Contexts of Teaching and Learning
An examination of the nature, functions, and consequences of teaching and schooling from cross-disciplinary perspectives. Teachers' professional lives, and the patterns of institutional structure and organization within school settings are stressed as is the relationship of schools to larger society. Required field experience. Prerequisites: None.

Educ255: Studying Children and Adolescents in Context
The development of children and adolescents within the context of the family, schools, culture, and society. Attention to individual differences and atypical or exceptional development among children and adolescents; practical implications for supporting their development in schools. Required field experience. Prerequisites: ED 225 recommended.

Educ303: Teaching Fine Arts in the Elementary School
Introduction to concepts, techniques and materials useful in promoting the visual, musical, dramatic, and performing arts throughout the elementary curriculum. Emphasis upon giving children the opportunities to develop their artistic creativity and appreciate the aesthetic values of movement, music, theater, and the visual arts. Required field experience. Prerequisites: Completion of ED 225 and ED 255 and application to the Teacher Education Program.

Educ305: Teaching Science and Technology in the Elementary School
Development of inquiry-based strategies for teaching science and technology informed by national and local curriculum standards, and the conceptual change model. Emphasis on developing habits of mind including curiosity, skepticism, and pattern seeking, and developing facility with processes of scientific activity: observing, classifying, conjecturing, collecting data, experimenting, modeling, and communicating. Required field experience. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Teacher Education Program.

Educ315: Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary School
The teaching of social studies in grades K-8 from multiple perspectives. Assessment, design, and implementation of research-based curriculum. Curriculum theory and concepts; integrated curriculum, instructional materials, resources, and technologies. Required field experience. (40 hours minimum). Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Teacher Education Program.

Educ325: Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School
Development of constructivist approaches to the teaching of mathematics emphasizing problem solving, reasoning, multiple representations, manipulatives, discourse, and student diversity, and informed by national and state standards for assessment and curricular planning. Required field experience. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Teacher Education Program.

Educ335: Teaching English Language Arts in the Elementary School
Research-based teaching strategies consistent with the Standards for the English Language Arts. Student assessment and evaluation. Integration of language arts with other curriculum. Required field experience. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Teacher Education Program.

Educ260: Middle School Philosophy and Curriculum
The cognitive and psychosocial issues of early adolescence, and their implications for grades 5-8 organization and curriculum in assessment, evaluation, and working with parents. Required field experience (20 hours). Prerequisites: Acceptance to the Teacher Education Program, Educ 225, Educ 255. May be taken before or after student teaching. Concurrent enrollment in Educ 305, Educ 315, Educ 325, Educ 335, Educ 360, or Educ 362 is prohibited.

Educ350: Teaching Middle School Mathematics
Constructionist and standards-based strategies for teaching mathematics in grades 5-8. Required of elementary and secondary teacher education candidates seeking an endorsement to teach math at the middle school level. Required field experience. Prerequisites: Educ 255, Educ 225, and consent of Educational Studies Department Chair. May be taken before or after Student Teaching and concurrently with Educ 345 or Educ 362.

Educ360: Teaching Humanities and Social Sciences in the Secondary School
Principles of curriculum development, analysis, and pedagogical theory and technique. Examination of national standards in the disciplines, curriculum planning emphasizing literacy conventions, primary sources documents, the nature of historical causality, or specific linguistic devices and grammatical constructions. Assessment and pedagogical strategies addressing developmental differences and the needs of learners from diverse backgrounds. Concurrent enrollment in a one-hour discipline-specific seminar in teaching is required. Required field experience (50 hour minimum). Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Teacher Education Program.

Educ362: Teaching Mathematics & Science in the Secondary School
National and state standards for assessment and curriculum planning, constructionist approaches emphasizing inquiry, experimentation, problem solving, multiple representations, systematic observation, conjecture, argument, discourse, diversity, and conceptual change models. Review of textbooks, teacher journals, and technology. Concurrent enrollment in a one-hour discipline-specific seminar in teaching is required. Required field experience (50 hour minimum). Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Teacher Education Program.

Educ370: Special Topics in Educational Studies
Educ401: Issues in Educational Research and Practice
Introduction to research methodologies, and the relationships among theory, practice, and research. Emphasis on developing the abilities of students as educational researchers. Students will also be assisted in completing capstone electronic portfolios that will demonstrate their professional growth and success in addressing state mandated curriculum standards over a four-year period. Required field experience. Prerequisites: Completion of ED 490, 491, 492 or consent of the instructor.

Educ385: Travel Seminar
Travel with a faculty member and fellow students. Includes independent projects, daily journal, and field trips to schools, cultural centers, museums, and/or other sites of interest. May be repeated if itinerary is different. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

Educ395/455: Independent Projects
An opportunity for qualified students to deepen their concepts of educational concepts and issues. Arranged to meet individual needs. May be repeated if project is different. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

Educ397/497: Internship
Directed research and individually designed field experience in an educational, community, or social service setting. Prerequisites: Junior/senior standing and educational advisor approval.

Educ 490/491/492: Student Teaching
Under the guidance and direction of a cooperating teacher and university supervisor, student teachers spend an entire semester in an assigned field placement. Concurrent enrollment in a weekly seminar is required. Prerequisites: 100 hours of field experience and acceptance to Student Teaching. Refer to the Teacher Education Handbook.
