     Welcome to the English Department!  Our curriculum introduces the historical, formal, and artistic aspects of literature.  It enhances critical thinking, analytical skills, and our understanding of the qualities and contexts of human experience conveyed through literature.  In addition, it develops students' writing and research skills.  The department prepares majors for graduate study in English, for the teaching of English in the secondary schools, and for entry in professional fields which stress education in the humanities and verbal skills--for example, law, journalism, publishing, government, or business.

    The department offers two sequences for majors: a Literature sequence and a Writing sequence in creative writing and journalism.  The department also customarily offers at least one course every other May as a travel seminar to the British Isles, the Caribbean, or Europe. 

    The English Department consists of 11 full-time faculty members, 2 to 5 visiting instructors, 5 student assistants, 1 office coordinator and approximately 200 majors and minors. Navigate through the links below to see what IWU's English Department has to offer:
