Study abroad
- Undergraduate Scholarships German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers Undergraduate Scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany. One type of scholarship application is normally due in January of each year is for the August - July of the following academic year and summer, so plan way ahead for some. See also this scholarship/ grant page.
- German Universities of Applied Sciences Study and Internship Program (DAAD)
Scholarship funds a full academic semester of study abroad at one of the participating universities of applied sciences (UAS7) in Germany and one semester professional internship experience in a company or research institute in Germany. Must be a sophomore or junior studying engineering, science, life sciences, business, management, economics, architecture, art, design, journalism, social work. Applications normally due in February for the following academic year.
- German Studies Research Grants
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) announces the availability of a number of German Studies Research Grants to highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are nominated by their department/program chairs. The grant is tenable for short-term research (up to 2 months) in Germany. The program is designed to encourage research and promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic and social aspects of modern and contemporary German affairs from an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective. Deadlines normally: May 1 and November 1.
Summer only
- "Hochschulsommerkurse" at German universities
A broad range of three to four week summer language courses with an integrated thematic focus on literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany are hosted by German universities each year. An extensive extra-curricular program complements and reinforces the core material.
The website of DAAD Bonn provides details on the content and logistics on the most recent course offer, which may be used for preliminary information on next summer's programs. As a rule, there are few changes from year to year. Deadline normally is January 31.

- FUBIS - Sommeruniversität at the Free University, Berlin
An excellent opportunity for students who have not had much German to study in one of Europe's most exciting cities. Most courses are offered in English with German language training and selected courses in German.
Internships
- German Program for Transatlantic Encounters - The German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest (GACCoM) offers U.S. students the opportunity to apply for the German Program for Transatlantic Encounters (Transatlantic Program 2006). This is the second year that GACCoM is able to carry out this program.
The Transatlantic Program 2006 offers an internship opportunity in Germany to 25 motivated and qualified students from U.S. colleges and universities, including one week of fully-funded pre-internship travel and immersion, which includes daily academic language and cultural instruction in Germany. Universities throughout the entire United States are invited to nominate their best students for this prestigious program. Students who have a working knowledge of German (2-years of college-level German) are invited to apply for participation. Please see information on application details. The Transatlantic Program is generally designed to offer young Americans the opportunity to gain a comprehensive perspective of German business, German economy and politics, as well as an insight into the German culture and language. Students must be majoring in Engineering, Economics, Marketing, Finance, Business Administration, or Computer Science. Deadline November 10, 2005 for nomination.

Research Internships in Science and Engineering gives students in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology and Physics the chance to spend a summer working with German doctoral students on serious research projects. The doctoral students help integrate the undergraduate directly into the lab work and serve as personal and professional mentors. All participants receive stipends from DAAD to help cover living expenses, and the partner universities and research institutions provide housing assistance.
- Emigré Memorial German Internship Program (EMPIG)
EMGIP (Émigré Memorial German Internship Program) offers internship opportunities for US and Canadian students in the German parliament, the Bundestag. The internships are two months long in positions matching the student’s interest and experience. Interns will be placed with their preferred Fraktion, Ausschuss, with individual members of the Bundestag and their offices. In addition to contributing to the respective offices, interns have the opportunity to study legislative and administrative procedures in the German parliament. Application deadline is normally January 31.
- Studienforum Berlin - Connects German businesses and other organizations with students seeking internship. Paid and non-paid internships. Applications are normally due in February of each year for that summer.

- The Global Studies Internship Program - DAAD/Hessen
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides scholarships for this internship program, which is supported by the State of Hessen. Each year has a different topic focus. See DAAD for scholarship information. The application is March 15, 2007 or until the program is full for the summer 2007.
Post-graduate Opportunities
- Deutschlandjahr Scholarships/ Deutschlandjahr Scholarships for students in the Arts/ Music
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers Deutschlandjahr Scholarships to outstanding bachelors degree recipients for study at universities in the Federal Republic of Germany. The deadline is usually November 15 of each year. November 1 deadline for students in the arts.
- German Studies Research Grants

- Fulbright Scholarships
This prestigious award provides funding for a full year of study in many countries around the world. Students develop a project proposal in conjunction with the Campus Fulbright Coordinator. There are also teaching opportunities in German-speaking countries as well. Deadline: Approximately September 15 of each year. It is imperative to contact the Fulbright Coordinator in April or May of the year of application.
- Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Program for Young Professionals
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals is a scholarship program with a strong focus on cultural exchange. It is designed to give participants understanding for everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany and the United States. In the US the program is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State under the authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961. In Germany the program is funded through the Administration of the Bundestag.
It is intended primarily for young adults in business, technical, vocational, and agricultural fields. 60 Americans and 100 Germans participate in the program each year. For American participants, the 12-month program begins in late July, and consists of 2 months intensive German, 4 months classroom instruction at a German University of Applied Sciences, 5 months internship in career field. Deadline normally is November 1.
- U.S. Teaching Assistantships at Austrian Secondary Schools - The English Language Teaching Assistantship Program is administered by the Fulbright Commission in cooperation with the Austrian Ministry of Education. For 2006/07 the application opens December 1 and the deadline will be 15 February 2006.
