Course Objectives: This course introduces students to the Spanish language and the development of all language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and facilitates an awareness of and sensibility to the cultural diversity of the Hispanic world.

Class performance: You must prepare for class in order to participate adequately. This means that you have to study a particular chapter (or etapa within the chapter) before you arrive to class. Of course, the necessary amount of study time will vary according to the particular conditions and capacities of each individual.

Course Evaluation Criteria:

Daily class participation. In order to participate you must be present. The participation grade includes: a) your willingness to participate;b) your contribution in Spanish in regular class sessions and in small group activities; c) your cooperation and leadership in group and pair work and d) your respect and attitude towards the class and peers.

Chapter tests. There will be one test per chapter.

Written/ oral assignments. Material assigned to be completed outside the class, such as the workbook, exercises from the book, the lab, etc.

Final Exam. This exam is comprehensive and will test three skills (listening, reading, writing) and your awareness of Hispanic culture.

Oral exams. There will be two oral presentations during the semester.

Attendance policy. In order to make the most out of your Spanish course, you must attend regularly. Regular attendance will expose you to the language and it will give you an opportunity to speak with your classmates and resolve your questions. Irregular attendance will severely affect your learning process and, consequently, your final grade in this course. You are allowed three unexcused absences that you should use wisely. After the fourth unexcused absence 2 points will be deducted from your final grade.

Your final grade will be determined as follows:
