International Faculty Development Opportunities
Several of our study abroad affiliates offer opportunities for university faculty to visit study abroad centers, increase their knowledge about education abroad issues, and enhance their own pedagogical and research skills. What follows are a few such opportunities.
If you are interested in pursuing any of these development opportunities, please contact the International Office.
The Studienforum Berlin is hosting a 13-day seminar in Berlin and Krakow on "Germany and Poland: A Troubled Partnership in a 'Deepening' European Union". The seminar will run from June 18 to July 1, 2008, and the deadline for applications is 1 April 2008.
For more information, please visit the Stadienforum website.
Each year, IES sponsors one or more trips to familiarize faculty and administrators at member institutions with IES Study Centers. IES subsidizes much of the associated costs, but participants are asked to contribute as well.
Through these familiarization trips, faculty develop first-hand familiarity with all facets of IES programs through visiting the IES Center facilities, touring local partner universities, attending classes, visiting student accommodations, and meeting IES students, staff, and faculty. In addition, attendees have the chance to explore the program locations through cultural activities and regional excursions.
The IES website provides information on upcoming familiarization trips. If you are interested in being nominated to participate in a familiarization trip, please contact the director of the International Office.
The Council for International Educational Exchange (CIEE) has been involved in study abroad since 1947 and today runs over 130 programs in over 30 countries. Each year, CIEE sponsors site visits to a select number of CIEE Academic Centers. CIEE subsidizes most of the expenses associated with these visits, but does request an institutional contribution.
Each site visit lasts approximately seven days and is designed to help faculty gain first-hand knowledge about the on-site facilities, meet with faculty, resident staff, and participants, and acquire a better understanding of the culture in which the programs operate. Schedules include visits to the host institution at which the program is based, class attendance, visits to homestays and/or dormitories, participation in student excursions, and adequate time to meet with CIEE resident staff and students, providing participants with an in-depth view of each program.
In 2007- 08, CIEE is planning to offer the following site visits.

CIEE International Faculty Development Seminars
CIEE International Faculty Development Seminars (IFDS) are intensive educational experiences designed to explore fascinations, challenge preconceptions, and open eyes to global issues shaping the world today. Each program features lectures, site visits, and discussions with overseas academics and colleagues. Participants return to campus poised to incorporate an international dimension into administration, course design, research, and teaching. Click here to read past participants’ evaluations and testimonials.
The list of 2008 seminars will be available on the CIEE website in mid-September. For more information, please also attend the September 17, 2007, Non-Org, offered by Professor Kathie O'Gorman, who participated in an IFDS this past summer.
IES Faculty Development Seminar
"The Changing International Legal Environment in the 21st Century"
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
June 15-21, 2008
Each year, IES offers development seminars for faculty members from the IES consortium. Seminars are sponsored either by an IES Center or jointly by IES and an overseas or US institution.
The seminars seek to bring together US and international faculty with local experts for an intellectual exchange of ideas. This summer's seminar will focus on "The Changing International Legal Environment in the 21st Century." Situated only 35 miles from the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, and the seat of Dutch government and home to the Universitiet von Amsterdam, Amsterdam is ideally situated for an exploration of contemporary international law. Possible seminar topics include the foundations of EU law, environmental law in an international context, recent developments in business law in the EU, and Islamic law in a European context.
If you are interested in being nominated to participate in a familiarization trip, please contact the director of the International Office by October 1, 2007.
International Educators Workshops in Copenhagen
For one week each semester, the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) hosts international educators for an International Educators Workshop (IEW) in Copenhagen.
The purposes of the IEW are to provide professional development to international educators and to provide an interactive introduction to the DIS programs and curriculum, the city of Copenhagen, and to Danish culture and society. Indeed, the IEW is like a mini-semester at DIS: participants attend classes; participate in field studies; get to know students, Danish faculty and DIS staff; live with a Danish host family (or stay at a B&B); and are introduced to Danish culture and society.
If you are interested in participating in either of the 2007-08 IEWs, please contact the director of the International Office.
IES Visiting Scholars Program and IES International Faculty in Residence
The IES Visiting Scholars program awards grants to U.S. faculty members for week-long participation in a structured activity at an IES Center. Grants range from $500 to $1000 and provide participants with the opportunity to enrich current research or teaching practices and gain a better understanding of study abroad. Applicants must be from IES Member institutions and should have existing plans, either a research sabbatical or other professional pursuit, near an IES program site. Selected faculty members will ordinarily spend up to one week at an IES Center.
The IES Faculty in Residence Program provides the opportunity for US institutions to host faculty from any of IES's 30+ Centers for lectures and class visits, and for those visiting faculty to conduct research at US university libraries, observe classes in order to better understand a US college experience, and meet with prospective study abroad students.
For more information on the Visiting Scholars Program, please visit the IES website. For more information on the IES Faculty in Residence Program, please contact the director of the international office or send an email to the IES Faculty Development Team at facultydevelopment@IESabroad.org.
