Dataset:  WISTAT - United Nations Women's Indicators and Statistics Database

How to Access Data:  Ames Library Scholarly Workstations, 2nd floor

Description:  The WISTAT is a global database of statistics and indicators on women and men. It contains detailed national statistics on a wide range of topics, disaggregated by sex where possible, for 180 countries and areas of the world, and a limited selection of statistics for 32 countries or areas for which very little data is available.

Data is organized into nine subject areas and 72 topics, which altogether contain more than 1500 statistical series. Subject areas covered are:

  • population composition and distribution
  • learning and educational services
  • economic activity
  • households (marital status and fertility)
  • housing conditions and human settlements
  • health and health services
  • public affairs and political participation
  • crime and criminal justice
  • national product and expenditure

Time period:  1994 - present  (updates irregularly)

United Nations

The database utilizes information currently available at the international level in the offices of the United Nations Secretariat, the statistical services of the United Nations regional commissions and the specialized agencies, including the International Labour Office, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the World Health Organization, and the International Parliamentary Union, a nongovernmental organization, supplemented by regional and national statistical reports. Complete sources are listed within each topic.
