IWU’s Freeman Earns D3hoops.com All-American Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Illinois Wesleyan senior Zach Freeman has been chosen to the first team of the All-American squad chosen by D3hoops.com and sophomore Mallory Heydorn was chosen for the second team of the all-Central Region squad (see below).
A 6-foot-7 forward from Bloomington (Normal Community HS), Freeman was one of 10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy, recognizing the outstanding student-athlete in Division III, and was a first team all-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin choice. He is one of 60 Division II, III and NAIA participants in the Collegiate Basketball Invitational, which will be April 19-21 in Wadsworth, Ohio.
In addition to being selected to the D3hoops.com All-America team, Freeman was chosen to the first team of the service’s all-Midwest Region squad.
This season, Freeman led the 11-14 Titans with a 21.6 scoring average and 9.1 rebounds. His .614 field goal percentage is fifth best in a single IWU season and his 539 points is 13th most. He was the Titans’ leading scorer in 16 games, top rebounder in 19 and had nine double-double games in points-rebounds.
For his career, Freeman scored 1,688 points and had 819 rebounds, making him No. 7 and No. 4, respectively in those school record categories. He was No. 2 with 472 free throws made, No. 7 with 602 made field goals and his .581 career field goal percentage is third best at IWU. Freeman was also 12th best in a career with a .744 free throw accuracy mark.
Joining Freeman on the first team were junior guard Andrew Olson of national champion Amherst, senior guard Mike Hoyt of Mount St. Mary, senior forward Tori Davis of Baldwin-Wallace and junior center Ben Strong of Guilford, who was the “Player of the Year.”
A total of 638 players were nominated nationwide for the awards by the sports information directors at the various schools. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for 10 players in their region. SIDs voted for six frontcourt players and four backcourt players and the top vote-getters at each position were named to the All-Region team.

Heydorn Earns All-Region Honors
IWU sophomore Mallory Heydorn (LaGrange, Lyons Township HS) was named to the second team of the all-Central Region team. Heydorn averaged a team-high 17.1 points and made a school season record 85 3-pointers for the Titans, who finished with a 22-6 record and were among teams in the Division III tournament. Her 410 points is tied for sixth most in a single Titan women’s season.
Heydorn set a school and conference record with 11 3-point field goals at Augustana on Feb. 14 and after two seasons, she is No. 27 in career scoring at IWU with 715 points and No. 6 with 136 3-pointers. The career 3-point record is 171 by Traci Butler (1992-96)
