How do I audition for the Jazz Ensemble?

Auditions are held the first Tuesday of classes in the fall of each school year during Jazz Ensemble rehearsal time (2:30 p.m.).   Prospective members sight read a chart not seen by any of the auditionees before and then are moved about the individual section to see how they perform on various parts.  Improvisation is encouraged as part of the audition process (Bb or F blues and “Rhythm” changes), but it is not required.  Those not majoring in music are encouraged to audition along side their contemporaries in the School of Music.  Traditionally the Jazz Ensemble has had several exceptional players on the band who were not majoring in music.

How can I find out about the Jazz Ensemble’s touring sites?

The Jazz Ensemble takes at least one tour every year.  These tours vary from two to four concerts a day in mid-west high schools, to alumni trips to Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Chicago, to May term travel courses to Asia, and Europe.  The locations of tour concerts are listed on the On Tour website.  Directors seeking an appearance of the IWU Jazz Ensemble at their schools can contact Dr. Streeter at tstreet@iwu.edu.

How can I purchase a Jazz Ensemble CD?

The Jazz Ensemble regularly records CD’s of the great big band literature. These CD’s are available at the IWU Bookstore and at concerts of the Jazz Ensemble.

Can I be on the Jazz Mailing List?

Yes! Those wishing to receive flyers promoting upcoming Jazz Ensemble concerts are encouraged to contact Dr. Streeter at tstreet@iwu.edu or 556-3269.  These flyers are sent out approximately two weeks prior to the Jazz Ensemble performances.

How can I find out more about the IWU Jazz Festival?

Directors seeking admittance into the annual non-competitive IWU Jazz Festival, which is held the third Saturday of each January, are encouraged to contact the School of Music, Dr. Streeter or e-mail jazzfest@iwu.edu.  Information concerning the festival is mailed to schools in October of each year prior to the January festival.

Is Dr. Streeter available to come to my school to do Jazz Clinics?

Dr. Streeter is often asked to visit schools to work with high school or junior high school jazz bands.  He has set aside Fridays to visit schools, but he also arranges other times to work with area bands.  He may be contacted via e-mail at tstreet@iwu.edu or at 309/556-3269.
