Introduction

For music teachers, at all grade levels, who wish to increase their knowledge of a wide range of music subjects and who seek professional development opportunities in one or more of these areas. Essentially, the focus will be on how to apply this knowledge creatively in one’s teaching in general and, in particular, how to introduce students to this knowledge through the art of composing music.

Subjects and activities will include:

  • An overview of the process of creativity
  • An introduction to the techniques of composing music
  • Suggested composition projects for students at different levels
  • A concise and practical review of music theory
  • An introduction to music notation software, particularly Finale (with “hands on” lab work)
  • Jazz improvisation, harmony, and arranging (beginning and advanced sections)
  • A concise survey of 20th-century and contemporary concert music
  • An introduction to music technologies (e.g., notation, sequencing, and recording software, etc.)
  • An overview of the Advanced Placement course in music theory
  • A survey of useful music websites
  • Copyright issues
  • Scheduled time in the computer laboratory for individual projects

The faculty:

The principal faculty member will be Dr. Mario J. Pelusi, Professor of Composition and Theory and Director of the School of Music at Illinois Wesleyan University. An accomplished composer, theorist, and conductor, Dr. Pelusi holds the M.F.A. and Ph.D. degrees in composition from Princeton University, and the B.M. and M.M. degrees in composition from the University of Southern California. Additional instruction will be provided by faculty members with particular expertise in the area of music technology.

Fees:

  • Tuition: $335 (includes all materials and access to recreational facilities)
  • Housing: $105 (attractive and comfortable single room, includes linens)
  • Meals: $105 (includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
