Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia of America is a national music fraternity founded in 1898 at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.  The Alpha Lambda chapter at Illinois Wesleyan University was founded in 1924 and has been continually active since then.  The Brotherhood strives to “encourage and actively promote the highest standards of creativity, performance, education, and research in music in America,” as well as to “instill in all people an awareness of music’s important role in the enrichment of the human spirit.”  The chapter is comprised of 27 men with various majors, who all profess a profound love of music.  They frequently pursue fundraising and charity projects, and have recently started a free lesson program for beginning-level area instrumentalists.  Within the past year, the chapter has contributed over $2800 to local and national charities, with a continued focus on supporting music in the local communities.  The Alpha Lambda chapter sponsors the Concerto/Aria Concert beginngin in 1979.  At the passing of their late brother and IWU faculty member Henry Charles, the chapter found it fitting to dedicate the annual event to his memory.  Henry Charles, Professor of voice at Illinois Wesleyan University for 42 years (1943-1985) and long time advisor of the Alpha Lambda chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
