Football Loses CCIW Opener to Carthage, 26-21

The Illinois Wesleyan football team lost its Homecoming game by a 26-21 score to Carthage on Saturday, Oct. 4, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener for both teams. Carthage jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before the Titans got on the board with 8:29 to go in the half on a 16 yard pass to Jack Scalcucci from Kraig Ladd. Carthage led 20-7 when John Meacham caught a 6-yard TD pass from Ladd with 5:07 to play in the half to make the score 20-14 at intermission. Bo Lanter (pictured), who finished with 93 yards rushing, scampered in on a 9-yard TD run in the third quarter to put Wesleyan ahead, 21-20, but the Red Men marched 62 yards on 11 plays to score, capped by a 24 yard pass from Evan Jones to Nick Merchut with 2:35 to play. The Red Men had 444 yards on 92 plays while IWU had 265 yards on 65 plays. Ladd was 23 of 39 for 212 yards and was sacked four times. Robert Beauchamp and Nick Nikolich led the way defensively with 13 total tackles while Neal Loftus had 10 tackles. The Titans, who play at Millikin next week, and Red Men are both 3-1 overall.

IWU Improves to 3-0 in CCIW Action

Illinois Wesleyan senior outside hitter Michelle Malinowski had nine kills and freshman Gaby Johnson eight in the Titans’ 26-24, 25-23, 25-18 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin volleyball victory over Elmhurst on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the Shirk Center. Wesleyan improved to 11-9 overall and 3-0 in CCIW play. Freshman setter Stacy Hassinger had 29 assists for the Titans, who received 13 digs from junior Jackie Wrobel and three service aces from sophomore Lori Johnson (pictured). The Titans are idle until hosting Millikin next Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Titans Top River Falls, 7-0, in Women's Soccer

The Illinois Wesleyan women’s soccer team had seven different players score goals in a 7-0 Homecoming game win against Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday, Oct. 4 at IWU’s Neis Field. Senior defender Tina Rodriguez (pictured) assisted on two goals (to Caroline Leighton and Elizabeth Sinclair) and scored one of her own on a penalty kick. Lauren Knaack, Amanda Kessel, Emily Marcheschi and Annmarie Dolak added the other goals while Marcheschi and Carlie Hoekstra had the other assists. The Titans improved to 7-4 overall while UWRF fell to 2-9. Wesleyan next hosts Elmhurst at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Women's Golfers Win Seventh Straight CCIW Title

For the seventh straight year, the Illinois Wesleyan women's golf team has won the championship of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament, held Oct. 3-4 in Naperville, Ill. The Titans' team score was 649, easily besting second place Wheaton at 681 at the Springbrook Golf Club. Lindsey Haines was the tournament medalist as she won a playoff with Wheaton's Brittany Bronson. Both finished with two-day totals of 159. Nicole Spear finished third with a score of 161 and Maddie Murphy was in fourth with a score of 163. Erin Bradley also finished in the top 10, coming in tied for fifth with her 166 total. IWU, coming off a school-best fourth place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division III championships last May, was recently ranked fourth in the latest national rankings by Golf World Magazine.

Men's Soccer Team Defeats Millikin, 2-0

In the Homecoming match, the Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team defeated Millikin, 2-0, on Friday, Oct. 3 at IWU's Neis Field. Chris Sleever (shown) scored in the 26th minute on assists from Jason Lopez and Stephen Rensa, then Greg Yao converted a Robert Tabaka corner kick for a goal in the 42nd minute for the balance of the scoring. IWU keeper Win Fisher made two saves as Wesleyan improved to 3-5-1, 1-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while Millikin falls to 8-3-2 overall. The Titans play next at Wisconsin-Whitewater on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Women Claim First at Carthage Invitational

The Illinois Wesleyan women's cross country team finished first of eight at the Carthage Invitational, held on Friday, Oct. 3 at the Wisconsin-Parkside course in Somers, Wis. The Titan women amassed 45 points as junior Kerry Devitt placed third in the 6000 meter run with a time of 23:03. Emily Willenbring was seventh and Mackenzie Clemens was eighth to also finish in the top 10 for the women. The IWU men's team was fifth of 10 squads, compiling 150 points. T.J. Luby (pictiured) was the Titans' low finisher in 21st place on the 8000 meter course with his time of 27:16 while Adam Chambers was 29th in a time of 27:34.

Men's Golf Team Wins Twin Cities Classic

The Illinois Wesleyan men’s golf team finished first in the 23-team Twin Cities Classic, played Sept. 27-29 in Minnesota and hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. The Titans shot a three-day team score of 870 after a final day round of 291 at the White Bear Lake (Minn.) Yacht Club course and IWU held off Division III No. 1-ranked St. John's (Minn.), who finished second with a team score of 874. Wesleyan's Mike DeRuntz and Bennett Blakeman finished tied for third with totals of even par 216 and Matt Wennmaker finished with a 218 total (2-over par). Andy Petersen of Central (Iowa) was the tournament medalist with a 2-under total of 214.

IWU's Piotrowski Named CCIW Player of Week

Illinois Wesleyan senior Kristen Piotrowski was named women's tennis player of the week in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin on Wednesday, Oct. 1 after her performance last weekend.
Piotrowski, playing at No. 3 singles, went undefeated over the weekend, winning both matches against CCIW competition. Piotrowski defeated Elmhurst's Stephanie Russ 6-0, 6-1, then defeated Wheaton's Brittany Dunn 6-3, 6-2. As a team, the Titans defeated Elmhurst 6-3, but lost to Wheaton 8-1. She is the second Titan to earn the weekly honor this season after Cassie Devore earned the honor on Sept. 17.
