IWU Madrid Program

Offered during the spring semester each year, the IWU Madrid Program allows 16-24 IWU students to study at the Fundación José Ortega y Gasset and to live with host families in Madrid. Students take one course with the Madrid Program director, an IWU faculty member -- in 2008, Professor Diego Mendez-Carbajo -- and select their other 3 classes from those offered by the Fundación. Spanish proficiency is not required, and students will be able to utilize Madrid resources including the Prado museum in their coursework. Madrid Program classes are pre-approved for General Education credit and may also satisfy requirements toward the major or minor with the permission of the department chair. Courses are designed to take advantage of Madrid's cultural resources and the program features educational excursions outside Madrid, which vary each year but may include Toledo, Barcelona, or Andalucia.

  • From Goya to Contemporary Art in Spain (Fine Arts)
  • Spanish Painting in the Prado Museum (Fine Arts)
  • The Golden Age Playwrights (Literature)
  • Management and Ethics in a Cross-Cultural Context (Analysis of Values)
  • The Political History of Contemporary Spain (Contemporary Social Institutions)
  • The Practice of World Religions in Contemporary Spain (Contemporary social Institutions)
  • Spanish Culture and Civilization (Cultural and Historical Change)
  • The Philosophy of José Ortega y Gasset (Intellectual Traditions)

General Education courses are offered in English and/or Spanish (minimum enrollment of 8).
