Biography

Saundra DeAthos, in "her still-blossoming career" (Allan Ulrich, Opera Magazine), is a versatile and integrated performer, hailed for both her vocal and dramatic ability.  Singing in a variety of styles, she is equally at home in the Baroque repertoire as she is in the most current genres.  While she is comfortable in many different styles, she is most acclaimed for her interpretation of Mozart. She "imparted vulnerability and an elegant soprano" to Sandrina from La finta giardiniera (Allan Ulrich, Opera Magazine).  Octavia Roca of San Francisco Chronicle said that "Saundra DeAthos, a real charmer of a soprano, made one love the maid, Despina" and Ching Chang of  San Francisco Classical Voice said that Saundra "provided a delectable portrayal of the scheming Despina, combining infallible comedic timing with lustrous and bubbly vocalism".  Saundra "was a feisty presence as Zerlina" and as Servilia in La Clemenza di Tito she "was particularly sweet-toned and elegant" wrote Richard Dyer of Boston Globe. In addition to her successes in Mozart, she has received accolades for her performances of the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor and Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, as well as Emily in Toch's Edgar and Emily.  "Saundra DeAthos nailed all of Emily's coloratura flights and showed perfect timing in broad physical comedy" (Michael Zwiebach, San Francisco Classical Voice).   Joshua Kosman of San Francisco Chronicle reiterates that she "delivered a virtuosic performance".   Saundra's dramatic abilities make her a natural for the musical theater and operetta stage, as well.  She finds great fulfillment in singing the lighter repertoire, such as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Casilda in The Gondoliers, Valencienne in The Merry Widow, Adele in Die Fledermaus, and Polly Peachum in Threepenny Opera. After completing an Adler Fellowship with the San Francisco Opera, she has appeared on the stages of many opera companies across the United States, such as Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Boston Lyric Opera, Sacramento Opera, Virginia Opera, Eugene Opera, Intermountain Opera, Opera North (New Hampshire), Opera Illnois, West Bay Opera, the Western Opera Theater Tour, and also internationally with Bangkok Opera in Thailand.

In addition to her operatic career, Ms. DeAthos performs regularly with symphony orchestras which include San Francisco Symphony, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Fresno Symphony Orchestra and the Elgin Symphony Orchestra.
