Biography

Sven Miller is a German-American theatre artist who trained as a performer in his native Germany and the United States. After his graduation from the A.R.T. Institute at Harvard University Sven worked for ten years as an actor, voice-over artist and teaching artist in New York and Germany. He has appeared Off- and Off-Off Broadway, in regional theatre, Film, TV and Radio. From 1998 to 2002 Sven was a resident actor with Irondale Ensemble Project in New York. In 2006 he graduated from Carnegie Mellon School of Drama with an MFA in Directing. At Carnegie Mellon, he devised the original works Hamlet’s Women and Cut Faust, and directed at Pittsburgh City Theatre’s Young Playwright’s Festival. Sven was recently invited to become an Associate Artist at the German National Theatre in Weimar, where he devised My God Rides a Skateboard in collaboration with Lutz Kessler, production dramaturg, citizens of Weimar and the theatre ensemble. The show opened in April 2007 and received a medal of recognition from the German President. Judith, a space installation with live music of Friedrich Hebbel’s classical text, premiered in July 2007 and is currently running in repertory at the National Theatre. A site-specific, interactive theatrical research based on 1001 Nights and the question of innocence followed in co-direction at the Todi International Arts Festival in Italy this past summer. Sven will return to Europe in May 2008 to direct an original work he is currently developing at Theater Waidspeicher, Germany’s oldest puppet theatre. In 2006 Sven joined the theatre faculty at IWU. In his first year he devised Into an Unlulled Sleep, written and co-created by recent graduate Nolan Kennedy, the School of Theatre Arts, 2 local homeless shelters and the acting ensemble. Sven participated in the 2006 Lincoln Center Director’s Lab, is a member of the professional actor’s unions AEA, SAG, and AFTRA, and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, SSDC.
