Volunteer Services

2008 Alternative Spring Break  -- New Orleans, LA

This year, an ASB group of 50 students and 10 faculty/staff members will travel to New Orleans, Louisiana from March 15-22, 2008. We will address such issues as community redevelopment, disaster relief, health services, and the impact of disaster on women and children while working alongside those who work and live with these issues everyday.

While there, we will volunteer with Operation Nehemiah, an organization that has hosted more than 13,000 volunteer workers, since Hurricane Katrina. They have gutted and cleaned out more than 3,000 homes, helped rebuild 32 homes, have painted dozens and dozens, helped distribute beds, appliances, furniture, and building supplies to more than 24, 000, and have counseled hundreds.

Along with the educational component of the trip, we will be doing hands-on service throughout the city, including counseling, rebuilding, maintenance, painting, or other on-going projects based on the needs of the community at the time. If you would like to learn more about Operation Nehemiah, please visit their website at www.OperationNehemiah.com.

If you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions, please contact Lola at rahove@iwu.edu.
