A Letter to Titan Fans from Coach Mia Smith

Titan faithful:

The 2008 women's basketball season has come to a close, but the doors to a record-setting season were opened wide. This year's team finished with an overall record of 26 wins (a school record) and only three losses, were ranked as high as fifth in the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll, set a single-game scoring record of 114 points (vs. Milwaukee School of Engineering), and led the nation in scoring with 85.1 points per game.

For the second time in school history, the women's team won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin basketball title (with a record of 13-1) and the conference tournament championship and hosted the school's first-ever NCAA Division III women's tournament game.

On behalf of my players and coaching staff, we'd like to take this special opportunity to thank all of you who believed in us and supported the Titans throughout the entire season, but especially for your support in the final weeks of the regular season and the NCAA tournament. To see the "Titan Faithful", clad in their green and white, standing to cheer, applaud and encourage the women was an amazing feeling - one that will never leave the hearts of all the players and myself.

The roar of IWU supporters as we scored 111 points in our regional win over Maryville was both deafening and uplifting. Over 1300 attended each game of the regional tournament and seeing that kind of support is a dream come true for the players and me. I truly believe they played their best because they were trying to say "Thank you" for coming out to see them play.

So, to all the fans (both young and not so young), families, the terrific Titan Band, sororities and fraternities, faculty and staff - thank you for your abundant confidence, your pride in the Green and White, and your presence at our games.

We WILL see you next year!

Coach Mia Smith
