Women's Studies Course Descriptions

WS 101 - Introduction to Women's Studies
The study of women, culture, and society through an examination of the construction of the concept of gender and the contemporary social reality of American life. Topics may include the image of women in literature, cultural variations in gender, religious and philosophical perspectives on sex and gender, issues of women's health, the relationship of gender, class, and ethnicity, and specific social issues such as economic discrimination and violence against women. Offered each semester.

WS 270 - Special Topics
Designed to explore a variety of interdisciplinary topics of current or unique interest not otherwise covered in courses designated for the Women's Studies major or minor. See current Program of Courses to determine if this course fulfills general education requirements.

WS 370 - Special Topics
Examination of selected topics in gender studies at the advanced level, focusing on theoretical approaches to the study of gender. See current Program of Courses to determine if this course fulfills general education requirements.

WS 397 - Internship
Students may arrange internships in consultation with a faculty member and a sponsor associated with a public agency, not-for-profit association, social service agency, business, etc. Prerequisites: Women's Studies 101 and consent of Women's Studies Director. Offered each semester.

WS 450 - Independent Study
Individual study in an area of special interest concerning women's experience, history, or feminist studies. Student must devise a plan of study in cooperation with faculty. Prerequisites: junior or senior standing; declared major or minor in Women's Studies. Offered each semester.

WS 490 - Senior Seminar
An advanced research and writing seminar examining a topic in women's studies. Students will, with the instructor, determine the topic of the seminar and develop a booklist and together create an activist component on the topic to present to the campus. In addition, each student in the seminar will individually research and write an analytical paper examining an aspect of the seminar's chosen topic. Offered each spring.
